Education History
I’m currently a senior in high school. I’ve gone to Iolani School, a K-12 private school, all my life. I will attend NYU film school in the fall.
Awards
I have received my school’s Headmaster’s award every year which requires me to finish the year with a GPA of at least 3.0 and no grade below a B-.
I have competed in numerous speech competitions. I am part of my school’s speech and debate team and have qualified for the state competition in the Duo Interpretation category. I’ve also competed in the American Legion Oratorical Contest, in which I had to recite an original ten minute speech and one five minute extemporaneous speech on the US Constitution. I placed second in my state and competed at the national competition.
Awards
Aside from academics, I have a deep passion for art. I have won first place at my state level in a video competition in which me and a partner created a 3 minute video about the right to privacy in the digital age. I also play electric guitar in my school’s stage band and have won an award for best musician in my band.
Additional Info
I spend my weekends practicing the traditional art of Japanese dance and shamisen playing.
Employment History
August 2017-January 2018: Room cleaner at Kaimuki High School, 10 hrs a week
July 2019-present: Kailua Cinemas employee (movie theater), around 12 hrs a week (the theater is currently closed due to coronavirus, so I am unable to work)
Awards
As previously states in the arts section, I have won an award for a video that I made with a partner. I was in charge of the writing, filming, producing, and directing, and my partner was the talent.
Additional Info
My passion is for film production, and that is what I’ll be pursuing in college. I constantly practice filmmaking on my own time in order to better my skills and advance my career.
Community Service
History
When I’m available, I also enjoy volunteering at the Shinto shrine where I practice dance and help with their festivals. I’ve been a volunteer Shinto blesser at the shrine’s annual Pet Blessing (4 yrs), Education Blessing (2 yrs), and New Years Day Festival (1 yr). Each blessing/festival is only one day, but I work an 8 hr shift.
I’ve also been a volunteer math tutor at my school. As a sophomore, I tutored a freshman in Algebra I for one semester and helped her improve her grade.
I’ve traveled abroad to Japan for three weeks in the summer of 2019 to volunteer as an English tutor with my friend. We volunteered at Ryo English School, a small, independent tutoring company in Yokohama, Japan. We helped to watch preschool and elementary school students during the day and taught lessons to middle school, high school, and university level students in the afternoon.
My school sometimes hosts beach cleanups that I will participate in when I get the chance.
Additional Info
I understand how important volunteering and giving back to the community is. I look forward to finding more opportunities to volunteer in the future.
